Donburi – rice bowl dishes

Donburi is rice topped with side dishes are served in one bowl, called a Donburi.
At the end of the Donburi dish name is “don”, like “Gyu-don” and “Katsu-don”.
It’s popular dishes that can be eaten easily without taking time.
Many Donburi dishes are seasoned sweet and salty.
A new dish “xx-don” is made one after another, so there are various kinds of Donburi menu now.

  • Gyu-don(牛丼) – Beef bowl

Rice topped with boiled salty-sweet beef and onions seasoned by soy sauce, mirin, soup stock, sugar etc.
It’s a very popular Donburi.
Eat with red pickled ginger and egg as you like.
Because it is provided cheaply, quickly and deliciously, people who want to save money and busy people often eat this.
If you like the soup of beef bowl, say “tsuyudaku” at the time of order. It means “with extra soup”.
There are many kinds such as ones with additional toppings such as green onion or kimchi etc.
There are gyu-don shops everywhere in Japan. Especially there are many Yoshinoya, Sukiya, Matsuya, and Suta-don. These are gyu-don chain restaurants.
Among them, Suta-don is a stronger taste than other beef bowls, and they have a lot of quantity.

 

  • Oyako-don(親子丼 ) – Chicken and egg bowl.

Donburi made with boiled salty-sweet chicken and eggs. Oyako means parent and child in Japanese.
Donburi menu made with salmon and salmon roe is also called Oyako-don.
If you go to a yakitori shop or a bird cuisine specialty restaurant, you can eat a little nice Oyako-don that sticks to the ingredients.

  • Ten-don(天丼) – Tempura bowl

A bowl of rice topped with tempura covered with sauce.
Tempura ingredients are mainly seafood and vegetables.
It’s recommended if you want to eat tempura easily.
You can eat Ten-don at soba restaurant and tempura restaurant.
Recently there are also Ten-don specialty restaurants.
Tenya is a chain restaurant specializing in Ten-don. You can eat reasonably easy to eat Ten-don.

 

  • Katsu-don(カツ丼) – Pork cutlet bowl

Braised pork cutlet with salty-sweet sauce, cook with eggs and put on rice.
Depending on the area, eggs are not used and cutlet is dipped into the sauce.
“Katsu” is the same sound as winning in Japanese, so sometimes it can be eaten before gaming.
You can eat Katsu-don at soba restaurants and pork cutlet restaurants.
Katsuya is a Katsu-don chain restaurant. You can eat Katsu-don easily there.

 

  • Kaisen-don(海鮮丼) – Sashimi bowl

Bowl of rice with sashimi (raw fish).
Tuna, shrimp, and salmon roe are often used.
Like sashimi, eat with soy sauce and wasabi.
Recommended eating in places where fish tastes good, such as the market and regional cities near the sea.
