Oden – Japanese dashi stew

Oden is cooked dishes with various ingredients with soup stock.
Particularly in winter, you can buy at convenience stores and pubs in Japan.

The best condition to eat Oden is to eat at a stall on a cold winter day.
But a good atmosphere Oden pub is in Ebisu.

It looks like that there are stalls in the pub. Oden’s pot is in the middle of the big table.
You seat as to surround the pot with other customers.

You may be confused by the way of ordering. You have to count the number of Oden you ate yourself.

In Japan, write a “正” character and count the number. When you take one Oden, draw a single line. Write lines so that it becomes “正” when you took five in total.
If you do not know how to order or count, you can ask other customers. You may share the table with Japanese.

The Oden has soaked in dashi soup. You can enjoy soup stock and ingredients taste. Eat with Japanese mustard as you like.

I will tell you the recommended ingredients.

  • Tamago(玉子): a Boiled egg. Japanese loves eggs that changed the color by soup stocks.
  • Daikon(大根): Daikon radish. This is probably the most popular ingredient. Daikon that has soaked in soup stock is indispensable to Oden.
  • Atsuage(厚揚げ): Thick fried tofu. This is a classic ingredient for Oden.
  • Mochi kinchaku(もち巾着): A rice cake wrapped with deep-fried bean curd. It is popular with children and women.
  • Konnyaku :(こんにゃく) Konjac. This is a traditional unique Japanese food made from a kind of potato. It is known as a good for health and diet in Japan.

It is close to Ebisu station.
