Tarai bune – Tub boat in Niigata

There is an unusual boat on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture.

Tub boat is built by improving Tarai which is tools used for washing.

Oar is attached to the top of the boat, and oarsman moves it right and left to row.

Tub boat can turn in a small radius, so it was used to take seaweed, abalone, turban shell etc in the narrow coast with many rocks.

Now, most of these are for sightseeing and travelers can ride.

Although it looks unreliable, it will not sink even if 10 people are on board.
If you are lucky, you can also oar.

Also, recommend a small nearby village called Shukunegi(宿根木) with a complicated alleyway like a maze.
